Lots of pubs have class, but few have a Royal pedigree. The Swan Inn on the pretty Swinbrook riverbank is owned by Deborah Cavendish, the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire. The last survivor of the famous and controversial Mitford sisters, she died in 2014 aged 94.
The pub’s dining room is packed with Mitford memorabilia, including photos of sisters Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica and Deborah who all grew up in Swinbrook. Diana and Unity were close to Adolf Hitler in the years leading up to WW2, while Jessica was a committed communist and Nancy a novelist famous for writing ‘Love in a Cold Climate’ and ‘The Pursuit of Love’.
The Swan Inn has also featured as a ‘Downton Abbey’ location. This is where Lady Sybil and Branson planned their controversial elopement in series two.
