Chippy photographer in full flower
Oxford Artweeks Christmas is fast approaching, and ECN’s resident photographer Sophie Carson is staging her very own exhibition at the Chequers as part of the festivities.
The weekend of 14 and 15 November welcomes a ‘mini’ Artweeks exhibition in the build up to Christmas – a staging post before the full annual calendar of events kicks off next May.
Oxford Artweeks is a celebration of the best local Cotswolds artists, who get together to stage a variety of displays, art and pottery demonstrations, and exhibitions in local studios, shops, pubs and public buildings.
Chippy-based artists Crabby Taylor, Judith Yarrow and Rosie Colvin are among those holding their own art presentations as part of Oxford Artweeks Christmas this month.
But we’d like to enjoy a special celebration with Sophie, showing our gratitude for her ongoing support of ECN. From cupcakes, cheeky pets and revelries to a marathon #GBHighSt judging assignment, Sophie has come up with amazing pics for us time and again – thanks Sophie!
Sophie’s exquisite eye for the tiniest detail is reflected in her amazing selection of flower close-ups, each print capturing a unique interplay of sun, rain, light and shade.
While Sophie Carson Photography concentrates on showcasing food and interiors, Sophie’s passion for flowers has finally resulted in her own dedicated exhibition of flower prints.
“I’m honoured to have this opportunity to display my work and look forward to staging the exhibition at one of our favourite local pubs”, Sophie told ECN.
“Flowers are my passion, and I like to examine them as closely as I can, not always from obvious angles.
“The quality of light is what makes the image. When you shoot in colour, that is what you notice first. With black and white, it’s about the light and the shadows. The detail of still life is also crucial. The close-up photos I take in my garden contain detail you might not normally see – there are tiny drops on the hairs of the geranium flower, which you wouldn’t see with the naked eye. And the rain-soaked Allium has a tiny world reflected in every drop.”
Sophie has worked hard and creatively to support ECN’s bid to become the Great British High Street’s Market Town of the Year 2015.
While still life is her photographic love and speciality, we’ve thrown her challenge after challenge – and the GB cupcakes were the only things which stayed still!
We think Sophie is finally starting to accept that she’s an ace all-round photographer. No matter whether her subjects are jumping about, strolling through town, punching the air, flexing their claws (Dougall the Chipping Norton Teaset cat) or woofing (Osca our tipsy doggie mascot), Sophie has it covered.
Sophie was the official ECN photographer on October 28th, when the Great British High Street judges visited Chippy to assess our town and enjoy our hospitality.
Sophie has introduced a range of quality greeting cards with a double purpose. They can be enjoyed as a celebratory card and then framed as a timeless picture – fantastic Christmas gifts.
All handmade and beautifully presented, they are available for £2.50 each or £10 for five. Choose between 18cm x 12.5cm and 15cm square.
Prints on blocks, like the 9.5cm square blocks pictured previously, will also be available at the exhibition in a range of sizes and prices starting at £12.
