You can’t accuse Chipping Norton Town Football Club of being a new kid on the block.
Many of its diehard members have lived in Chippy and played footy for the club since they were young – including proud Treasurer Adam Hunt, who lives and plays by the motto: ‘Never give up, Never give in’.
Here he tells ECN what makes CNTFC tick, tracking its history from 1893 through the glory days of the 1970s to its incarnation as a hugely popular club kicking goals for the town and wider community.
When was Chipping Norton Town Football Club founded?
Chipping Norton town football Club was established in 1893, and the new committee was re-established in July 2016 consisting of players, managers and lifelong supporters.
What age groups do you cater for?
16 years and above.
Where is the home ground and clubhouse?
Enstone Sports and Social Club, Cox Lane, OX7 5YA.
What kind of atmosphere and culture do you try and create?
We pride ourselves on being a club that is genuinely a big part of the local community. The vast majority of players live in the town and many of us have played for the club since we were young.
The club aims to positively promote the game of association football to its members, offering coaching and competitive opportunities to every member who wishes to play – ensuring sustainable and quality provision for all.
Are you looking for new hands on deck?
We are always looking for new players/faces, coaches and/or volunteers to maintain and sustain such a great, close-knit club and remain a vital part of our local community.
Can total beginners join?
Yes, total beginners are welcome. Players must be 16 years or over.
What are some of the challenges of running a football club?
One of the challenges we face is making the club a financially viable entity which will be there for locals in the future.
As a re-established club, however, we’ve been lucky to win the support of numerous sponsors.
Is football as popular as ever?
Football within Chipping Norton and surrounding areas remains as popular as it has ever been. We have a number of fans and spectators who regularly attend league and cup matches, as well as following us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and website.
What is CNTFC’s most memorable moment?
Over the years since 1893 the club has won numerous honours, but most recently the First Team won the John Fathers Junior Shield back in 2012 which was a great moment.
CNTFC was founder member of the Hellenic League in 1953 after winning the Oxfordshire Senior League for two previous seasons, going on to win the Division One league title in 1961 and 1971.
The Chippy club truly took off in the late 1970s, taking out the Hellenic Premier in 1978 along with a couple of Oxfordshire Cups and working up to the Midland Combination.
We won that title later in 1981, following the lead of non-league Spurs by winning a title in a year which ended with a ‘1’. Sadly, though, this terrific run didn’t last.
Reaching too far into the pockets, financial difficulties forced the club to drop back into the Oxfordshire leagues rather than go out of business.
Recent years have seen a real resurgence, with the club working its way back up in the Witney & District Football Association Leagues. During the 2015/2016 season, the First Team came seventh in Premier Division and the Reserve Team came ninth in the Second Division following promotion and a cup final the previous year.
CNTFC would love to hear from you if you’re interested in playing, coaching or volunteering, and the club always welcomes new sponsors.
