The Story So Far
Buoyed by a groundswell of support, Chipping Norton marches into the final days of the Great British High Street contest with a spring its step and a burgeoning sense of community pride.
As the team behind Chippy’s bid, Experience Chipping Norton applauds the talent, commitment and stamina of our team which has ignited the imaginations of our town during October.
Striving to be one of Britain’s best market towns for business, residents and visitors has been no flash in the pan. Months of preparations came before our entry was submitted in August and even bigger things are planned for Chippy’s future thanks to the ongoing efforts of our volunteers.
While winning our category and the overall national contest against 20 other finalists remains our ultimate goal, Chippy will never be the same again regardless of the result.
Three places in our region have been been shortlisted for the best High Street in the UK. Bognor Regis in West Sussex and Twyford in Berkshire are in the running, along with Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, and as Victoria Cook reports, the team behind that town’s bid are feeling upbeat

Now is the right time to reflect on the highlights of the campaign, thank our supporters for their incredible contributions and urge everyone to continue voting every day with all their email addresses until the polls close – eerily on Friday 13 November.
With the final outcome hinging on a combination of the popular vote and the judges scorecard, we call on everyone right around Oxfordshire to dig deep and help Chippy2win. In the meantime, enjoy some of the highlights we’ve chosen from the campaign.
Chippy’s #GBHighSt Timeline
ECN sends a six-member delegation to the Great British High Street Seminar in Belper Derbyshire, which was the overall winner of last year’s competition.
The original deadline for submissions into the #GBHighSt Competition and Osca, the pickled pointer, becomes ECN’s unofficial mascot.
ECN rolls out massive overhaul of content on its website and a social media blitz to generate public awareness and support.
Chippy shortlisted as one of Britain’s best market towns and becomes one of 21 finalists chosen from more than 230 entries.
ECN launches Friend of #GBHighSt – a new blog about Chippy’s participation in the competition.
Website re-badged and Chippy2Win domain launched to spearhead the voting campaign.
ECN announce arrival of Dame Edna Everage to blitz the web and social media for votes.
First Voting League Table released showing Chippy in second place behind Helmsley.
Chippy’s #GBHighSt mural appears at the entrance of WHSmith.
Judges visit Chippy. ECN becomes first #GBHighSt finalist to broadcast parts of the visit live, using Periscope on Twitter.
Second Voting League Table released showing Chippy in pole position ahead of Britain’s other best market towns Helmsley and Colne.
International TV and radio personality Graeme Garden recites a poem written by ECN website editor Wendy Riley specially for the awards.
