Historical things to do in Chipping Norton
The Rollright Stones has been voted one of the Seven Wonders of the Cotswolds. This ancient megalithic stone circle has baffled experts for centuries. Reputed to be older than Stonehenge, the stones are treasured by locals and a firm favourite with Chippy visitors.
The site of mystical Halloween and Solstice rituals, the complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments feature the King Stone, the King’s Men and the Whispering Knights, around which many myths and legends have arisen.
The Rollright Stones found fame in the Dr Who series The Stones of Blood, featuring as the main location in the four-part 1978 series starring Tom Baker. One site legend states that it is impossible to count the stones. At the series end, Tom Baker’s character notes that the number of stones in the circle has changed. Which just goes to show the power of television.
