Places like Chipping Norton are often overlooked by media outlets more interested in attention-grabbing headlines than nitty gritty community news.
But the Great British High Street competition has turned that theory upside down, with newspapers, TV, radio and social media packed with coverage of ECN’s shot at winning national recognition for Chippy.
Since being shortlisted, we’ve been flooded with inquiries from journalists, messages of support from public figures and offers of help from unexpected quarters – all seeking to spread the word about the positive improvements we’re making to our historic market town.
As the only Oxfordshire finalist among 230 UK entrants, Chippy has been thrust into the spotlight as it strives to win the popular vote, impress the #GBHighSt judges and give the overall prize a major shake.

Our friends at BBC South have also given Chippy’s bid a good run on TV with crews visiting to report on the shortlisting and the judges visit. The attention has certainly lifted Chippy’s profile and shone a spotlight on some of our renowned independent businesses.
Three places in our region have been been shortlisted for the best High Street in the UK. Bognor Regis in West Sussex and Twyford in Berkshire are in the running, along with Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, and as Victoria Cook reports, the team behind that town’s bid are feeling upbeat
